Federal law limits the number of hours per day and per week that a commercial truck driver can operate a tractor trailer, semi-truck, tanker truck, 18-wheeler or big rig. Among other things, the hours-of-service rules limit a driver to 11 hours of driving within a 14-hour window, which must be followed by 10 hours off duty.
